About
Battle Atlas
Interactive histories of major battles, starting with the Second World War.
What this is
Each battle gets its own page: an interactive history you can read, play and explore. Every battle page has the same core chapters, from the road to the battle to its aftermath, plus one or two special chapters that fit that battle.
The home page puts every battle on a world map. Drag the slider through the war, or press play, to see which battles were under way each month. Battles marked as in the works do not have their page yet.
How to use a battle page
Chapters. The tabs under the battle’s name open its chapters, and each chapter has its own address you can share. The links at the foot of a chapter lead to the one before and the one after; the left and right arrow keys do the same.
The battle map. The battle map runs on a clock. Press play, drag the time slider, or pick a moment from the log beside the map. Phases jump to a stage of the battle. Views switch between everything that was there and only what one side knew at the time.
Show details. Each chapter leads with its key numbers and main story. Methods, caveats and secondary material sit behind “Show details”: open it to read them.
Light and dark. The site follows your system’s light or dark setting.
How the facts were checked
Each battle page is checked claim by claim against published histories and official records, and the sources are listed in each battle’s Aftermath chapter: see Midway’s sources.
Colors
Allies: blue Axis: orange
On every page, blue stands for the Allies and orange for the Axis. The two colors appear only on side markers, routes and the names of sides and nations, always next to a label that names the side.
